VALUES
Values
DEFINITION
In Burned Illusions, a value is something you want your life to be about, stated clearly enough that you can see the distance between it and how you actually spend your time.
Burned Illusions is a Personal Change OS designed to help people observe patterns in their own lives, test small changes, and learn what actually helps them move toward the life they want.
A VALUE IS NOT A GOAL
A goal can be finished. A value cannot. Honesty, closeness or craftsmanship are directions you keep choosing, not boxes you tick.
That is why values are useful for change: they still apply on the days when nothing goes to plan.
THE GAP THAT MATTERS
Write down what you say is important. Then look at last week honestly: hours, attention, energy. The gap between the two is not a moral failure — it is information.
Most gaps are not caused by weak character. They are caused by an ordinary life that was never designed around the value in the first place.
TURNING A VALUE INTO SOMETHING TESTABLE
Choose one value and one small action that would express it this week. Make it small enough that a bad day does not cancel it.
Then observe what happens — including resistance. What you avoid tells you as much as what you manage.
IN SHORT
- Values are directions, not achievements.
- The gap between importance and reality is data, not judgement.
- One value plus one small action beats a full list of intentions.
- Resistance is part of the observation.
THE WORKING LOOP
MAP → PRACTICE → OBSERVE → LEARN → ADAPT
- MAP
- Describe what actually happens: context, trigger, feeling, interpretation, impulse, action, consequence.
- PRACTICE
- Choose one small, safe step and try it in real life.
- OBSERVE
- Record what actually happened — not what should have happened.
- LEARN
- Look at several observations together and see what repeats.
- ADAPT
- Adjust the next step based on your own evidence — and start again.
THE FIVE PHASES
- 01Identity & fear
- 02Control & truth
- 03Purpose, love & death
- 04Freedom, acceptance & gratitude
- 05Presence, forgiveness & relationships
